Dr Mahabir is the best

5 out of 5 stars

Dr. Mahabir always takes the time to listen to my health issues. This visit was a follow/up appointment from being admitted to the hospital. Further testing Is necessary and then a future plan of action will be determine by my gastroenterologist and Dr. Mahabir.

Annual physical, prefer blood test ordered prior to physical so it can be reviewed face to face

Dr. Mahabir (going to him for around 40 years) is "extremely" knowledgeable! He keeps abreast with the advances in the medical world. He is remarkable.

Love the doc. But today when I called , the receptionist reprimanded me for my tone. That upset me more than showing up at the podiatrist two days in a row with no referral completed and no way to see the foot doctor for very painful plantar faciatice.

I fired Dr. Mahabir from my care team this week. He has always been stuffy and borderline blasé, but he left me without my antidepressant medication for over a week. I called the office, my pharmacist called the office, receptionist sent him messages at increasing priority. It took me firing him for negligence for him to call the medication in. It’s not controlled or anything special. No referrals needed and he wasn’t on vacation or anything. He just needed to sign for refills which is a regular part of his job. He also has you waiting up to an hour in his waiting room. While this next part isn’t my case, my mom’s given me permission to tell it. My mom also used Dr. Mahabir as her primary. She suspected at one point she had a condition called Polymyalgia Rheumatica. She asked for a referral for a rheumatologist. He said no, he could treat her. Without seeing a rheumatologist for testing and verification, he put her on a high, long term dose of the steroid Prednisone. This is already a medication that when taken for an extended period of time, can have many (some severe) side effects and therefore needs monitoring. That didn’t happen and instead, anything my mom asked for (increase, decrease, nausea med, sleep med, etc.) he did without actually knowing whether it was right or not. During this time my mom, likely triggered from the steroid, went into a severe manic episode. The first of her life (Bipolar 1 can manifest late in life). She became incredibly aggressive, impulsive to a dangerous point - spending tons of money, and not sleeping for days. Fearing for her safety, I requested a consult with him when I knew she would be coming minutes later for her own apt. Instead of calling for a mental evaluation, asking any questions or raising any concerns for her safety (I told him directly that she was doing unsafe things) he just said he’d lower her steroid dose. He should have sent her to a mental health professional immediately, or at the very least spoken to one for advise. He didn’t and things got much, much worse. She also never had Polymyalgia Rheumatica, which he would’ve known had he given her the referral she requested for a specialist. My mom has finally gotten help and is on medication. She left Dr. Mahabir not long after all this happened and my father passed. And not to be petty, but I saw him on the day my father died. He was in a coma and it was clear he was going to pass. Dr. Mahabir didn’t bother to ask how he, my mom or I was doing. I brought it up myself and he only said “yeah I’ve been reading the daily reports”. No “I’m sorry for your loss” or anything kind or empathetic. It’s at the bottom of my list of reasons I dislike this man but if you’re supposed to be a FAMILY doctor, I think checking in with the family when they’re already in your office and you know tragedy has hit them is a part of what makes you a good person yet alone physician. There are also never any emergency spots open, you’re just told to go to the ER, even if it’s something small like strep. I’ve never had a GP that didn’t keep emergency spots for such things. Please think before making an apt with Dr. R. Mahabir. You can do better.

How can he be almost 5 stars with all these one star reviews? Others are right that he seems like a nice guy, but he’s the perfect example of biding his time to retirement, do the bare minimum, “not my problem” pcp. Just started see him after Aetna dropped UConn. He was the first pcp with an open appointment. Now I know why. After first visit, he sent the wrong referral to Endo and sat on response from them for 3 weeks. Ignored my chart messages and calls to office. I finally booked emergency appt with him to fix referral and help with my critical diabetes issues. Upon finding out that it would be 5 months more to book an appointment with new Endo, he still refused to treat my diabetes knowing I had already gone 3 months with my blood sugars exceeding 300 a day. He didn’t “want to get in the middle of the treatment”. He knowing left a patient with 300 blood sugar a day wait 8 months for treatment. I ended up having to book with my old Endo and pay out of pocket.

Ever since he's gotten involved with Hartford healthcare the service plummeted. I couldn't even cancel an appointment for my 93 year old mother and tell the doctor that she was admitted in the hospital. I waited for hours while I was at work and never was contacted from his office.

I've been seeing this doctor for a year, and although he is quite nice, the secretarial staff is awful. They have not returned my calls on multiple occasions, seemingly just forgetting about the inquiries altogether, and are rude and condescending over the phone. Further as kind as Dr. Mahabir is, he was also making me return every 3 months for a very common prescription. When I ask the staff to ask him for permission to visit every 6 months, as I have a job and a young child, and insurance that doesnt coer 3 month visits for a very common prescription, he staff get rude, condescending, and almost angry that I would try to advocate for myself. I have been receiving this prescription for over a decade and have never had to visit 4 times a year to receive a simple refill (no other pre-exisiting conditions or areas of concern). Its quite obviously a way for the office to get more money at the patient's expense (see similar complaints in other reviews).

Recently the office staff has been terrible, they haven't followed up on prescription refills one time they told me it didn't go through 20 minutes later they said the doctor has to look at it before they prescribe it it's a bunch of BS I believe the doctors office staff is not following up on your job., Robin mahabir is great,,, but the office staff is not satisfactory in my eyes they may be friendly following through on there responsibilities not so much...
